I was at Wine Paris, the first big French wine fair in two years, sniffing around for quality white Burgundy.
My nose led me to the area of the Groupe des Jeunes Professionnels de la Vigne, or the young winemakers of Burgundy. Current WineSpark winemakers Mylene & Benoit Nicolas and Guillaume Michaut are members, so I thought there’d be further talent to discover here.
One sniff of this wine and I knew I’d found The One. A flinty, nutty, citrusy nose, followed by a broad, textured and complex palate - fine wine heaven.
Julien Gros is a bit of an outlier in Savigny-Les-Beaune, a region much better known for its reds. 80% of Julien’s production is white wine, and being the 10th generation in his family to make wine, it’s fair to say he knows what he’s doing.
It’s from a small, south-facing vineyard on clay-limestone soil called Clos du Village. The wine is aged for 14 months in 50% new oak barrels, and this combination of ripeness, minerality from the soil, and influence from the oak, make it a full-flavoured Chardonnay full of elegance and complexity.
I can’t wait to hear what you think of this discovery!
