If you’re going to try Grüner Veltliner, then you may as well try the best wine from one of Austria's best producers.

The Vogelsang vineyard is Herbert & Carmen’s favourite, the jewel in their crown, their Grand Cru.

It's south-facing and situated on pure limestone soils - Herbert believes that the greatest Grüner is grown on pure limestone - you get a more mineral, pronounced and complex wine.

It’s totally organic, natural and biodynamic too - Herbert & Carmen believe in cultivating the healthiest soils which result in beautiful and balanced grapes - leaving very little for them to do in the winery.

The grapes are hand-harvested at the end of the growing season, the must is fermented very cloudy, and the wine is bottled unfiltered, so every last drop of energy and sparkle is transported to your glass.

It’s complex, layered and smoky… with a long, layered, mineral finish. Herbert recommends getting out your best Burgundy glass, and contemplating life in all its glory while enjoying this.

It’s ‘definitely one of our best wines ever’ according to Herbert & Carmen, and it’s hard to disagree after tasting this.

Nine years after first meeting him, I’m delighted to re-unite with Herbert and his wife Carmen for WineSpark. It’s hard to imagine a more exciting producer coming out of Austria right now.

This wine is due to its profound, smoky and spicy nature a very universal food companion, especially for dishes with aromatic intensive sauces.

Not the best Austrian Gruner I've had, but damn close.

Seems to be more Austrian Gruner Veiltliners around these days, which is great, but its worth spending money to get the better stuff. The really good stuff is incredible. This is really good stuff.
It looks pretty in the glass and its just layers of flavour.... So much going on. Definitely more mineral than the honey and rich fruit in Kamptal but its a cracking wine.
