Carinus Family Syrah 2023
Member Price €19.41
This amazing-value red is the combined work of one of South Africa’s top growers (Danie & Hugo Carinus) and one of its very best winemakers (Lucas van Loggerenberg).
It comes from the Polkadraai Hills in Stellenbosch, one of the best places in the world for growing Syrah.
Danie describes it as a ‘melting pot’ of soils. Polkadraai sits on an ancient river bed that once ran down to False Bay. As the sea came in, it deposited sandstone, and as it receded, it mixed in decomposed granite and shale.
The comparison to Cornas is, in Danie’s words, ‘uncanny’. You have granite at the top of the hills, and as you move down south it gets sandier.
The vineyard behind this wine was planted in 1996 on sandy soils - and the whole area is cooled by south-easterly winds blowing from False Bay. Perfect for aromatic, perfumed Syrah.
If you like your northern Rhône reds you’ll be in heaven here… the nose is all white pepper, lavender and blackberry, while the palate is fresh, juicy and wonderfully pure.
Wines like this are why I believe South Africa delivers the best bang for buck in the wine world.
Danie could only spare us a tiny allocation - so grab yours while you can, and I’ll do my best to secure more next time around!

Danie’s simple but powerful philosophy is to grow the best possible fruit and find a talented winemaker to facilitate it into bottle.

According to Danie - 'This works a charm with venison carpaccio or beef tartare. Here, we've used springbok loin for carpaccio and also Kudu fillet. I would venture even game fish crevice.'
