Bierzo is without doubt the most exciting emerging fine wine region of Spain.

And Valtuille, a tiny village of 60 people, is regarded as the best part of it.

It’s here that César hails from, and the 9 generations that have come before him, including his famous uncle Raúl Pérez.

César proudly presents this bottle as his Vino de Villa - his village wine.

The 80-100 year-old vineyards are based on mostly sandy soils around Valtuille, which gives a finer, more elegant style of Mencía.

Once the grapes are harvested, they’re gently foot crushed and the juice ferments naturally in large wooden casks. The wine is then transferred to fine French oak barrels to age for 12 months.

Think Premier Cru Burgundy - it’s silky and textured, with plenty of structure and spice. It’s drinking well now, and will definitely reward you if you stick a few bottles away to come back to in a few years’ time.

Great wine

Extraordinary clean wine that fills your mouth and then stays with a very fascinating finish; think dark chocolate. I rather loved it.

A mouthwatering review – thank you Campbell!

Burgundy light

Ordered this wine as part of the Spanish finds case of 6. Great find and everything I love about Mencia. Some can be either a bit green or jammy but this one has great balance with a fresh nose and depth of fruit with light tannins and cherries. Reminds me of a pre global warming light elegant village Burgundy but for half the price! Really elegant and will be delighted to buy again. (92)
