At Château Grand Boise, I’ve found a rare thing in Provence - a long-established estate quietly obsessed with quality, and not hype.

Perched on the steep terraces of Mont Sainte-Victoire, just southeast of Aix-en-Provence, it has all the raw ingredients to make brilliant wine:

  • Altitude: vineyards up to 645m (among the highest in Côtes de Provence), which keeps the fruit intense and fresh
  • Aspect: around 80% face north, so the grapes ripen slowly and build real complexity
  • Old vines on mixed soils: a smorgasbord of parcels across multiple soil types, each adding its own character.

Founded over 400 years ago, the estate has only changed hands four times.

The current owners, Jean and Ana Sofia Simonet, took over in 2013 and have spent the last decade quietly modernising the viticulture and winemaking, to really maximise the potential of the place.

I tasted the full range (reds, whites and rosés) and genuinely wanted to buy the lot - which is not something I’ve ever said about a Provence estate. This is a serious outfit.

You can expect vibrant raspberries, cranberries and juicy peaches from this crisp and completely delicious drop.

Try it with a proper Provençal bouillabaisse - saffron broth, garlic rouille and crunchy croûtons. The rosé’s crisp, salty freshness cuts straight through the richness and makes the seafood sing.
