When I asked Serena for samples of her big Italian reds, what I didn't expect to turn up was this absolute gem of a white.

It’s from the little known Roero region which is right beside the far more famous Langhe. Langhe looks like a postcard - rolling hills, imposing wineries, immaculate vineyards. Roero in comparison is more mountainous, wild and biodiverse, dotted with pockets of tiny vineyards. Serena tells me the people are a bit wilder too!

Serena’s brother Gabriele is the quiet hero behind this wine. He looks after the grape-growing and is at peak happiness tending the vines and surrounded by the bees, bugs and butterflies that thrive in this vineyard.

The name Innav is a dedication to their late grandfather Vanni, and if you look closely at the label you'll see Gabriele as a little boy picking grapes with him like they used to.

This is a super refreshing white wine - it’s floral, peachy, and has loads of pear and apple flavours going on too.

Serena and Gabriele Cordero are a brother and sister duo from Alba in northern Italy.

I've known Serena and her dad Gianfranco for years at Naked Wines, so I knew exactly who to ask when I was looking for some special Barolo and Barbera for WineSpark.

It might sound strange, but anchovies are very traditional in Piedmont, which is an inland area. There was an ancient route from Liguria to the Alps, which passed through Alba. So this wine is perfect with bread and butter and anchovies.

Serena also suggested fried frogs but I’ll leave that one to you.

And if you don’t have frogs, whip up an asparagus risotto.

Impressive

I'm a massive fan of Piedmont's reds but had yet to find a white to equally impress. Having tasted this Arneis, my search is now over. I found it exceptionally well-balanced with a pleasing drive of salinity throughout and on the finish. Versatile too - this is excellent with food or without.

Chuffed your search has ended, Annabel!

Almost grassy gooseberry and granny smith apple flavours, with citrus and stonefruits tones too and gentle acidity as others have mentioned. Lovely long finish in the mout, with hints of flintness. Really great find!

A great find

I shared a bottle of this with a friend of mine who is a keen wine lover and she was so impressed she asked could she take a picture of the label. I was similarly charmed. We both agreed that it was chiefly the lack of acidity that made this wine so delicious. Needless to say I have ordered more!

Hmmmm!

Amazing floral notes on the nose. It just doesn't deliver on the taste. Perhaps it I was in Italy sipping this wine in the warm summer sunshine it might taste different!
