Corofin Folium Vineyard Chardonnay 2022
Member Price €34.92
Mike’s Corofin range is named after the village in Co. Clare that his great-grandfather emigrated from in the 1920’s.
He makes his wines in a real Burgundian philosophy and style - aiming to showcase the special vineyard sites that the grapes are grown on.
The Folium Vineyard in Marlborough’s Brancott Valley is owned by the daring and perfectionist grower, Takaki Okada.
What makes this place unique in Marlborough is that it’s 100% dry farmed. When Takaki bought the vineyard 15 years ago, he turned off the water. People thought he was mad, and 3-4 years followed with very little fruit. But then it started to get interesting.
Because Takaki doesn’t use irrigation, the vines’ roots must reach down deep into the soil for water and nutrients. It also means there’s less canopy and fruit on the vines, but they put all their energy into growing and ripening the grapes.
You land up with riper flavours and beautiful balance in the fruit, and the result is clear to see in this wine.
This is a textured, structured Chardonnay, with yellow fruit, citrus, spice and even a touch of saltiness. If you like a bigger style of Chardonnay like Meursault, then this is one to try.
This is exactly what Corofin wines are all about - showcasing unique and special vineyard sites.
And it’s organic too!
