As wine countries go, New Zealand is incredibly young. It's just 25 years old.

It is of course best known for Sauvignon Blanc, but the combination of cool climate, ancient soils and undulating landscape makes it ideal for producing world-class Chardonnay.

And it's only in the last 10-15 years that people have worked out which sites work best for this grape.

Mike works with two single vineyards here - the Wrekin Vineyard at the top of the Brancott Valley, and Takaki Okada's dry-grown Folium Vineyard, just one kilometre down the road. You get lovely a citrusy freshness from the Wrekin, while the Folium adds ripeness and weight.

Take the minerality of a Chablis and the richness of a good Meursault, and you're in business.

This is an elegant, refined Chardonnay that would give any Burgundy a run for its money, at a fraction of the price for its quality.
