Corofin Marlborough Pinot Noir 2021
Member Price €32.12
Mike’s Corofin range is named after the village in Co. Clare that his great-grandfather emigrated from in the 1920’s.
He makes his wines in a real Burgundian philosophy and style - aiming to showcase the unique vineyard sites that the grapes are grown on.
This wine is a blend of two of these special vineyards - Wrekin and Settlement.
The vineyards are planted to a reasonably high density for Marlborough - double the amount of vines per hectare than you’d get in a typical Sauvignon Blanc vineyard. More vines fighting for the same space means less fruit per vine, therefore more fruit intensity and what Mike calls ‘vineyard identity’.
The Settlement Vineyard is owned by Dog Point and is farmed organically. It faces north-east so it gets sunshine in the first half of the day.
And based in the foothills of Marlborough’s Southern Valleys, the Wrekin Vineyard is fast becoming one of the most sought-after vineyards in the country.
It’s densely-planted, organically farmed, and its clay soils, which sit over a bed of Greywacke rock, produce fruit that is incredibly pure and aromatic.
The winemaking is very gentle to preserve the vineyard character - it spends 14 months in old French oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered to keep every last nuance and detail possible in the wine.
If you love fine Burgundy Pinot, then you have to give this a try.
