The thing that makes Burgundy so magical and alluring is the land.

Small changes in soil type, slope aspect and elevation between vineyards make all the difference when it comes to the character and style.

Winemaker Mike Paterson makes it his business to find these nuances and small details in Marlborough’s best sites.

And one such special site is the Wrekin Vineyard.

Based in the foothills of Marlborough’s Southern Valleys, Wrekin is fast becoming one of the most sought-after vineyards in the country.

It’s densely-planted, organically farmed, and its clay soils, which sit over a bed of Greywacke rock, produce fruit that is incredibly pure and aromatic.

You get a very flinty and mineral nose, with strong citrus and floral aromas. It’s a tight and pure style, and its subtle saline flavours reminds me of a really good Chablis

These are high-quality, artisanal wines, hand-made in small quantities. Each year and vineyard is different, just like great Burgundy is.

A tough one

Incredibly intense wine....
Nose: Pattex adhesive, apple, gingerbread.
Palate: quite some acidity for a Chardonnay, flavours are many, but a bit strange for us.
Tastes more like a strong orange wine, which is not our cup of tea.
