This is Thibaud’s top wine, and shows you the amazing potential of the Juliénas sub-region of Beaujolais.

The vines are on north-facing slopes, so it’s more about freshness and florals here, rather than power. Just like a good Pinot Noir from up the road in Burgundy.

Thibaud’s not sure how old the vines are, but he recently bumped into the guy who planted the vineyard, who’s 89 now and planted them when he was around 15.

This wine confirmed for Thibaud that great Juliénas needs time - the wine spent a year in barrel and then a year in tank in the cellar before bottling. Thankfully he’s done the ageing for you - and I took the last of the 2018 as it’s drinking perfectly now.

So if you’re a fan of Burgundy reds, and want to try something new, this stunner should be on your list.

Winemakers like Thibaud Baudin are driving the new Beaujolais forward. Although he’s only 37, his CV is impeccable. Following stints at Paul Jaboulet, Domaine de la Vougerie and Domaine d’Henri, he settled in Juliénas in 2018 with wife Antonie and two young kids.

This is a great match for a classic lamb boulangère, with herbes de provence and new potatoes.

It was the highlight of my Christmas Day.

N.K. (Dublin)

This was my highlight wine at the Spring Winespark tasting and the vigneron was really humble but passionate about his wines. Have bought it on 2 occasions since and very sad to see it is sold out. Lovely floral and peppers nose with a hint of tobacco. Lovely structure and balance between fruit and acidity with gentle tannins with a long ethereal aftertaste. Miles away from the green, acidic gamay of yesteryear or the jammy, alcoholic ones of recent vintages. Great wine (94)

Lovely

Its not the most Juliénasy Juliénas I have tried, I expect a bit more structure from a Juliénas, maybe needing to eat with it.
This is a bit softer, less tannic, drinks super well on its own... like a Fluerie, but one that'd hit you a slap if you said the wrong thing to it.

Like the Sarraziniere, miles better than any Beaujolais I can remember drinking

Excellent

Never someone to buy Beaujolais, yes no claim to being an oenophile, I bought 6 of these after tasting them at the Winespark tasting evening. Now buying another 6! Super wine with lovely lightness, fruitiness BUT also it lingers on the palate and has complexity. Not what I remember from Gamay! Completely won over by this quality 2018 wine. Perfect for a hot summer's evening!
