Pouilly Fumé lives in the shadow of its more famous neighbour Sancerre. It’s a bit more intense and full-on than Sancerre, if that’s your thing (it is mine).
And Damien tells me Domaine des Berthiers is one of the most underrated estates in Pouilly Fumé.
It’s got amazing soils - 100% on silex (flintstone), the top soil in the region. This brings out the optimal flavour and expression of Sauvignon Blanc - you don’t get this anywhere else in the world.
Silex lends itself particularly well to wood - so this is aged for 12 months in old French oak, to make it richer, more structured, and a bit of toasty oaky goodness. Mmm.
This is one for the wine nerds out there!
