A French friend of mine had been looking for Gigondas for her own wine business, when she came across a goldmine of powerful reds in nearby Sablet and tipped me off.
The winemaker of Domaine Les Sibu, Loïc Alazard, is just 29 years old. He’s the first in his family to study winemaking, work abroad, and take their production out of the local Gigondas cooperative to make wine for themselves.
He’s exactly the kind of winemaker I love to work with - ambitious, unproven, and with untapped potential and value.
This wine is a typical Sablet blend of Grenache, Syrah, and a small amount each of Mourvedre and Carignan.
It’s all about the fruit here, which is farmed organically on sandy soils.
The wine is aged in concrete tank for 6 months, which highlights all the lovely dark fruit, violets and black pepper. It’s rich, creamy and spicy - just what you want in a southern French red.
So if you like your Côtes du Rhône Villages, such as Gigondas, at a great price - then this red is for you.
