Mylène tells me Hautes-Cotes de Beaune is the best value appellation in Burgundy. And upon tasting this, you’d find it hard to disagree.

The 50-year old Chardonnay vineyards are situated high up on south-facing slopes - so you get great flavour in the grapes but also freshness from the elevation. The soils are clay-limestone - which gives the fruit a lovely and subtle complexity.

Then in the winery the wine is aged for 10 months in a mixture of new and old French oak which gives the wine a gorgeous nutty, oatmeal character.

Everyone goes nuts for Macon - but this further north and is fresher, rounder, better balanced.

This is just textbook Burgundy Chardonnay at an amazing price.

Finding value in Burgundy is like finding a needle in a haystack. Luckily for you, I have connections with their finger on the pulse of young, upcoming producers and that is how Domaine Nicolas came to my attention.

The Nicolas family has been making the wine here since the French Revolution - Mylene and Benoit are the 6th generation to make the stuff.

Terrific value.

The oak on the nose is a little strong, however the palate delivers a great quaffing wine, it has good body, well balanced & a decent length. Burgundy is getting so expensive, and this is great value.

This is very very good for the price.

I got it for my wife with the Christmas dinner. Had to try it myself obviously. I've had Burgundy Chardonnay with prestigious names that I dont think I enjoyed more than this.

Really liked this wine

Drank it NYE. Initially found it more acidic than I had expected for a chardonnay, but it mellowed out beautifully and was perfect with smoked salmon starter.
