Santenay isn’t widely known or appreciated… but talk to any wine expert who knows their stuff and they’ll hold a soft spot for wines from here. It’s the last stop south of Cotes de Beaune and before Cote Chalonnaise, so you get a darker, riper style of Pinot.

This wine comes from a vineyard the size of a tennis court called Les Charmes Dessous. The vines are 70 years old, and produce fruit that is concentrated and complex.

Then in the winery things get a little crazy. They use both French and American oak to age the wine - which is total heresy in these parts. But while the French oak gives the wine extra oomph and tannins, the American oak brings out that gorgeous silky strawberry sweetness which I love in good Pinot.

Finding value in Burgundy is like finding a needle in a haystack. Luckily for you, I have connections with their finger on the pulse of young, upcoming producers and that is how Domaine Nicolas came to my attention.

The Nicolas family has been making the wine here since the French Revolution - Mylene and Benoit are the 6th generation to make the stuff.

A great name for a vineyard

Nose: blackcurrant, plum and a smokey scent
Palate: "smokey plum", almond, cinnamon and cloves. Certainly perfect with Asian duck.
For us very enjoyable 16,5

Beautiful

Just had this with a salmon pasta dish, a beautiful combination. I must get a couple of bottles for Christmas to see how it goes with turkey and ham.

So thrilled you liked it, thanks so much for your review!
