Santenay isn’t widely known or appreciated… it’s the last stop south of Cotes de Beaune and before Cote Chalonnaise, so you get a darker, riper style of Pinot around here.

This wine comes from a tiny, 70 year-old Premier Cru vineyard called Grand Clos Rousseau. It’s in the same area as the Santenay Les Charmes Dessous, but the vineyard is more elevated, giving the wine a bit more finesse.

The wine is aged in 35% new French and American oak for 12 months. Using American oak in these parts is total heresy, but it rounds off the tannins and dark fruit in the wine beautifully.

Due to extremely limited supply, there's a limit of 1 bottle per customer on this wine.

Finding value in Burgundy is like finding a needle in a haystack. Luckily for you, I have connections with their finger on the pulse of young, upcoming producers and that is how Domaine Nicolas came to my attention.

The Nicolas family has been making the wine here since the French Revolution - Mylene and Benoit are the 6th generation to make the stuff.

Very tasty burgundy with nice mineral and barnyard aromas and sweet cherries on the palate. The use of new American oak is pretty obvious and crowd pleasing and should settle with time but a bit too sweet and gives a little too much vanilla flavours for me now. 90+
