Rod is a big believer in Gamay - the native grape of Beaujolais. When you taste great, aged Beaujolais, you realise it has the potential to produce seriously fine wine.

It just so happens that Hawke’s Bay, his backyard, is ideally suited to the grape.

Not that many New Zealanders have caught on to it (yet) - the whole of the country has just 5 hectares of Gamay planted, compared to 5,000 hectares of Pinot Noir.

Wines like these might just start to change all of that. Rod gets the fruit from a pristine nearby vineyard called Two Terraces, managed by the Quinn family.

The wine is fermented whole-bunch, and matured in a combination of old oak and concrete eggs, allowing the beautiful crunchy red fruit and violets of the Gamay to shine through.

In a world where Burgundy is getting increasingly expensive and hard to get, Gamay from Beaujolais and beyond is poised to take off.

Try this and see why. And while you’re at it, enjoy it slightly chilled!
