This wine is from the tiny and remote Arribes region, in the far west of Spain, right on the Portuguese border.

It’s so remote here that Tempranillo never made it this far west - and therein lies Arribes’ secret weapon.

The local grape varieties - like Juan García, Bruñal, and Rufete - fully ripen at 12 to 12.5% alcohol.

So you get full-on Mediterranean flavour, at much lower alcohol. The holy grail!

This wine is a field blend of these varieties - making it the perfect introduction to this little-known wine region.

The grapes were picked from 80-120 year-old plots, and fermented whole-bunch for a bit of extra grip and structure. The wine is aged then for 11 months in French oak, just 10% of which are new.

It has gorgeous red fruit, bursting with lavender and rosemary, and a fresh, elegant palate. If you love Beaujolais, this will be a revelation!

Vibrant redcurrant, raspberry, nice depth and finish, the comparison with Beaujolais is spot on

Quite tart on it's own, and I think with some foods it would appear overly thin. Didn't try but guessing it would be lovely with Brie and goats cheeses.

Thanks Joe, yep I enjoyed this when I first met the winemakers with a simple cheese and cured meats dinner at their family home on a hot summer's evening. Served chilled this wine was divine! Cheers Eamon
