Iria Otero Sacabeira Albariño 2024
Member Price €23.52
When you taste this wine, you’ll discover what real Albariño tastes like. Galicia is a high, hot and humid region, right by the sea, and you should be able to taste these influences in its wines.
Iria sources from 3 special plots which all bring something unique to the blend - one vineyard by the sea, another by a eucalyptus forest, and a third on a valley floor. You can really taste the influence of the sea… it has a gentle salinity which is quite moreish and unbelievably delicious.
Iria names all of her wines after animals who have bad reps (and unfairly so). The Sacabeira here is a local salamander which has poisonous skin to ward off predators, but if you see it in your vineyard, you know it's healthy and free of chemicals and pollution. They’re in Iria’s vineyards but sadly you see less and less of them as Galicia gets more built up.
Iria describes her wine as a more traditional style of Albariño - the ultimate compliment for her is when an old person tastes the wine and tells her it reminds them of the wine their grandfather used to make.
This is real, authentic Albariño that's just hard to find outside of Spain.

Iria trained as a pharmacist and spent time in London before returning home to become a winemaker. During her studies she met my good friend Carlos Rodriguez, and 20 years later Carlos recommended I speak to her.

It’s got to be seafood - clams, octopus, scallops, mussels - all insanely amazing with this wine.
