Iria Otero Teixugo Ribeiro 2022
Member Price €23.50
Let Iria show you the rare and wonderful reds of the Ribeiro region in Galicia.
Ribeiro is one of Spain’s oldest wine regions, situated 30km from the sea in the northwest of Spain.
It’s a pretty breathtaking place - three big rivers converge here, so most of the vineyards lie on unforgiving and hard-to-get-to slopes.
Ribeiro is best known for its white wines (mainly from Treixadura) but this red really stole my heart when I tried it at Barcelona Wine Week.
It’s a blend of Sousón and Caíño Longo - native grapes you’ll only find in Galicia and parts of Portugal. The Sousón comes from a west-facing vineyard, the Caíño from an east-facing one, either side of the Avia river.
Putting them together is like ‘two neighbours who hate each other’ says Iria, but it really works.
Iria matured the wine for 13 months in big Italian oak casks, which were previously used to age Super Tuscans.
The nose leaps out of the glass - full of dark fruit, herbs and spice. On the palate it’s fresh, juicy and easy-drinking - it’s the perfect alternative to lighter reds such as Burgundy and Beaujolais.
More and more people are asking for lighter reds - at 12% alcohol, this hits the mark and then some.
