You’ve no doubt heard of Red Tempranillo, but how about White Tempranillo? I couldn’t believe my tastebuds when I first experienced this wine.

Most white Rioja is made from the Viura grape - and tends to taste quite oaky and flat. Mateo wanted something fresher and punchier, so he planted an experimental vineyard of white Tempranillo 15 years ago - making it the oldest white Tempranillo vineyard in Rioja!

It’s incredibly fresh and floral on the nose, with tons of lemon meringue, honey and brioche in the mouth. If you like whites with a bit of oak like good Burgundy, you’ll love this.

I first met Mateo through my great friend Carlos Rodriguez back in 2014. We called into his winery near Logrono for a ‘quick Sunday lunch’ - I finally got out of there several hours later and barely able to move or fit back in my piddly rented Seat Ibiza.

A much reordered house favourite.

Its not a chardonnay, nor a Viognier but has qualities of both. Drinkable by itself and great with white meat and fish dishes.

Thanks Jerry this was a real find for me too! Cheers Eamon
