The name for this wine comes from Silberberg - literally ‘Silver Hill’, a limestone plateau above the village where the grapes are grown.

They’ve known it as a great spot for growing Riesling and Pinot Gris since the 9th century, so there’s plenty of history behind it!

So you’re in great hands with Mélanie Pfister, one of Alsace’s finest winemakers and the eighth generation of her family to make wine here.

This is a tiny parcel - Mélanie rents just five rows from the grower, and none of the wine usually leaves France (until now!).

Silberberg is a slow-ripening site, so Mélanie has to wait patiently for the grapes to reach full maturity. This builds serious flavour in the grapes, but it maintains great freshness at the same time.

Then it gets really interesting. Because of its natural power, Mélanie ages the wine in old Burgundy barrels - which previously held top Chardonnay - for 15 months to shape that richness.

This is highly unusual practice for Alsace, but it works a treat.

The result is a pure, textured and intense white, with flavours or pears, peach and quince on the nose. The palate is floral, honeyed and creamy - rich but fresh and balanced at the same time.

This is about as good as Pinot Gris gets - in Alsace or anywhere else.
