This wine is from a village called Kallstadt, famous (or infamous) for sending two notorious sons to the US in the mid 1800s: Herr Heinz and Herr Trump.

It’s also called Vom Saumagen because the vineyard is shaped like a sow’s stomach.

Is your mouth watering yet?

Those two interesting facts aside, this is an incredibly delicious Riesling.

It all starts in the vineyard - limestone mixed with loam soil is great for water retention in the summer. Part of the vineyard is south-facing, which gets extra ripeness and flavour in the grapes.

This is a region on the rise - a local winemaker just received the first ever 100 Parker Points for Riesling - so Gerd’s grapes are in hot demand.

Gerd grew up in a sleepy German village called Bad Durkheim, where his parents and grandparents were farmers and grapegrowers.

You might not be surprised to learn Gerd is now a winemaker in Bad Durkheim, but made damn sure he experienced the world before settling back here.

This one straight from Gerd - spring potatoes with pan-fried trout and white asparagus salad (there a few lakes in our forests with trout, and spring is the season for white asparagus and new potatoes).

Fantastic wine, comparable to much higher-costing wines. A real star.

A spicy oriental meal was perfectly washed down by this wine.

What a super pairing, thank you for the review!

Deliciously fresh

I'm generally a fan of red wine, but this white wine is one of my favourites. Not too dry, light and delicious chilled!

It really is a super Riesling, Sarah! Thank you for the review, so glad you like it.

Well worth waiting for

This is a glorious Riesling. I had been looking forward to tasting it and was delighted with the experience. We had it with potatoes, fish and asparagus. It turned a lovely meal into a banquet. I will be drinking much more of this.

Good minerality, clean and fresh mouthfeel.

Top Riesling from a small producer, low in alcohol, good length, very approachable, goes well on a sunny patio to cool you down!!!😎
