There isn’t a more dynamic and exciting wine country in the world than Spain right now.

An unexpected consequence of a century of wars, emigration and rural decline is the vast quantity of precious old vineyards left largely untouched.

You combine this with a new generation of ambitious winemakers, along with the affordability of doing business here, and you get unbeatable value for quality.

A new shipment has just turned up from Spain, so I’ve put together an incredible selection from some of the country’s top independent talent.

In this case you’ll get a bottle each of:

  • El Hato y el Garabato Sin Blanca 2019 - a field blend from 80 year-old vines, mainly using the Juan García grape. This has gorgeous red fruit, lavender and rosemary, with a fresh, elegant palate. If you love Beaujolais, this will be a revelation!
  • Cillar de Silos Ribera del Duero Crianza 2022 - a rich and powerful Tempranillo from old vines, and the house wine in high-end restaurants across northern Spain.
  • César Márquez Parajes Bierzo 2023 – the last few bottles of hotshot César’s introduction to Bierzo. He takes small parcels from all over the region to make this wine - including some hillside sites which sell for eye-watering prices elsewhere
  • El Bufón de Arrayán Garnacha 2021 - the vineyard here is on slate soils which gives the Garnacha a lot more freshness and complexity. Think Burgundy meets Barolo and you’re getting close
  • Vinyes d’Olivardots Gresa 2019 - Carlota’s flagship red and a blend of several small vineyards on varied soils, giving you the perfect introduction to Empordà. The nose is incredibly bright and vibrant, with blue fruit and savoury notes, while the palate is juicy, pure and spicy
  • Cal Batllet D’Iatra Priorat 2019 - an explosive blend of Carignan, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, but still so smooth and approachable. At €22.86 for members, trust me, this is a lot of wine for the price!

Or if you’d like to build your own case, here’s a selection of wines made by Spain’s best rising talent.
