If you’re one of those people (like me!) who loves something sweet at the end of a big meal, then you’ve come to the right place.

Beerenauslese means ‘berry selection’. The process to make this wine is painstakingly manual, but the results are spectacular and totally worthwhile.

Gerd waits until later in the season to pick the grapes, when they’ve started to dry and shrivel on the vine.

The grapes at this stage are delightfully sweet - there’s now a higher percentage of sugar versus water in them. This process is called ‘botrytis’ or noble rot.

Everything is hand-picked from the vine and then hand-sorted again in the winery - to make sure only the most perfectly rotten grapes make it through.

The wine then ferments slowly and naturally, and you end up with a fresh, rich and ripe sweet wine, with an exotic and tropical twist. A further few years’ ageing in bottle means some lovely nutty and marzipan flavours have developed.

It’s sweet-but-not-too-sweet, and will compliment any dessert or cheeseboard at the end of a great meal.

This wine comes in an adorable 37.5cl bottle.

Gerd grew up in a sleepy German village called Bad Durkheim, where his parents and grandparents were farmers and grapegrowers.

You might not be surprised to learn Gerd is now a winemaker in Bad Durkheim, but made damn sure he experienced the world before settling back here.

Gerd reckons this wine will pair beautifully with a cheese platter - especially blue cheese. Locally they have Beerenauslese with rhubbarb deserts too.

A Surprise

Not having tasted this wine before, we decided to have it as an aperitif ( M likes a vermouth). It was wonderful; so glad we bought a few, as now we must wait until Eamon gets his June shipment. Cheers! A must have wine.

Thanks Dom for the great review, glad you enjoyed and have a great weekend! Eamon

This wine astounded

A truly beautiful sweet wine. It has, after one meal, become my favourite sweet wine. I really did not believe, before I tasted it, that a German wine could surpass the classic French sweet wines but this one does. My wife made a beautiful Caramel Custard, what the French call Creme Brûlée, but in Ireland we always called ir Caramel Custard. The combination of flavours was fantastic. This, as well as the Stepp Pinot Noir and Riesling are promoted to my must haves.

Thanks Tim! Gerd can do no wrong in my eyes. Eamon
