Nothing beats a magnum of great wine. It looks sensational, tastes sensational, and lasts much longer than a normal bottle.

This time last year I was chatting to Gerd on the phone. He asked if my customers might be interested in some special magnums in his cellar.

He’d done a one-off bottling of magnums for a restaurant customer in the Netherlands, and had a little left over.

The wine is a blend of two vineyards on mostly sandstone soils near Gerd’s home village in Pfalz. Aged in Grand Cru Burgundy barrels, this is loaded with bright red fruit, violets and spice.

If you’ve got any Christmas wine shopping left to do… magnums make a great gift, and get you the ultimate brownie points with your festive guests.

Gerd grew up in a sleepy German village called Bad Durkheim, where his parents and grandparents were farmers and grapegrowers.

You might not be surprised to learn Gerd is now a winemaker in Bad Durkheim, but made damn sure he experienced the world before settling back here.

Read more about Gerd.

A gem from Gerd - wild boar stew with bread dumplings and red cabbage (in the forests there are plenty of wild boars, and bread dumplings are a bit of a speciality here... as is the slowly-cooked red cabbage)
