Hemel-en-Aarde means ‘Heaven on earth’ and it’s an accurate description of one of South Africa’s most beautiful and exciting wine regions.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are kings here - and the best examples can easily rival top Burgundy.

Berene has followed the lead of former Hamilton Russell winemakers Kevin Grant and Hannes Storm - to source grapes from the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, the highest part of the valley.

The grapes here sit on the vines for 2-3 weeks longer than the rest of the valley, developing richer and more complex flavours.

Grapes from the Ridge are lighter in structure, so Berene presses 10% of them as whole-bunch, and cold soaks with pips and skins intact to beef it up a little.

She then adds further structure and flavour by ageing the wine in French oak for 9 months - so you end up with a fragrant, soft Pinot with tons of red fruit and cranberry, with lovely intensity, freshness and length.

Wine expert Greg Sherwood called Berene the “next South African Pinot Noir icon” and from tasting this, you can believe the hype.

By buying this wine you’re also supporting Berene on her brave journey to start a vineyard in Tesselaarsdal, the nearby village where she’s originally from, and where her ancestors lived as freed slaves.

So you get an amazing wine and help someone live their dream, what’s not to love about that?!

Every wine list needs a kick-ass Pinot and Chardonnay and it's hard to beat the good stuff from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in South Africa.

So when I was tipped off on an employee of the legendary Hamilton Russell Vineyards making her own wine on the side, I had to find out more.

The Pinot Noir expresses the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge site with its pristine fruit profile. This works very well with grilled lamb chops as well as oven-roasted lamb shanks served on mushroom mash with root vegetables.

Handsome SA Pinot

Tops of our 4-way blind pinot tasting Christmas Day. Fruit packed, mouthfilling and of course only 2022. Very interesting to see how it evolves

A blind pinot tasting is an excellent way to celebrate Christmas – thanks Hugh!

A true pinot noir from this area of South Africa which we were lucky to visit before. Reminds me of a Hamilton Russelll. Medium bodied with a real juicy feel that clings to the sides of the mouth. Delicious

So pleased to hear you're a fan, Keith. It's a wonderful pinot noir!

Utterly delicious Pinot

Slightly baked strawberry fruit, but in no way jammy. Soft tannins. Subtle, elegant, long. Super Pinot Noir and drinking beautifully now.

Beautiful review Patricia, thank you! Cheers Eamon

Vibrant and delicious

Vibrant pinot noir with delicious flavours. Reminiscent of some NZ Pinot from Central Otago but maybe fruitier than usually found with hints of raspberry and cranberry. It is a light style with good acidity to cut through fat.

Thanks Joe - one of the best Pinots on the site, no doubt about it. Cheers Eamon

As good a Pinot as you will find from South Africa and very good value compared to Burgundy

Looking forward to more of this wine

Excellent Pinot Noir. Like sipping on damp moss from a forest's ferny floor.

Will be back for more.
