Introducing This Is WineSpark - The Festive Edition.
I didn’t have to think too hard about this. After weeks of writing about wine, tasting new arrivals and packing boxes, I’ve been quietly plotting this selection for when the feet finally go up.
So here are the six of the bottles I’m most looking forward to enjoying over Christmas:
- Clos Léopold Gigondas 2021 - from one of Gigondas’ highest vineyards on the slopes of the spectacular Dentelles mountains - this is more northern than southern Rhône in profile - full of white pepper, vibrant fruit and violets. So delicious
- Domaine Cornin Pouilly Fuissé Clos du Roy 2022 - Christmas calls for classic white Burgundy - this is a beautiful example from rising star Romain Cornin
- Anne-Sophie Dubois l’Alchimiste Fleurie 2022 - I’ve searched for the right Fleurie for years, and I finally found it. This has the seriousness of a good Burgundy, but the charm and drinkability of a great Beaujolais
- Metzer Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 - a smooth and sumptuous Cab with extra oomph from the Shiraz and Cinsault in the blend. When you’re tired of turkey and it’s time for beef - this is the bottle you’ll need
- Carinus Rooidraai Chenin Blanc 2023 - my favourite white wine at the moment, Chenin is my weakness and this is one of South Africa’s finest. Aoife Carrigy in the Irish Independent yesterday agreed, mentioning it in her top 40 wines of the year
- Camilla Scavino Castello Barolo 2021 - saving the big guns ‘til last. A tip-off from Serena Cordero, this is a pure, precise and elegant Barolo - powerful but beautifully balanced. I’m thrilled to land this just in time for Christmas.
It’s been a huge year. Our fundraise and international expansion have allowed us to snap up some serious winemaking talent, and improve the overall WineSpark experience for you.
It also gives us the foundation to build even bigger things in 2026 and beyond.
I’m so proud of these wines and winemakers, and I can’t wait to sit down and enjoy them over Christmas.
