The 2022 vintages from Mike Paterson’s Corofin Family Wines have just landed.
You might know this already, but this is some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the southern hemisphere.
And it’s all thanks to Mike’s careful vineyard selection and meticulous winemaking.
Each year Mike takes his best performing sites based on the vintage conditions, and makes four stunning single vineyard wines.
2022 was the perfect growing season. There was plenty of warmth and rain in the spring, followed by a cool summer. This led to longer hang-time on the vines - always a good thing for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
So in this pack you’ll get a bottle each of the following wines from 2022:
In the case you’ll get:
- Settlement Vineyard Pinot Noir - from an immaculate east-facing vineyard in the Omaka Valley, managed organically by Dog Point. This is all vibrant red fruit and and deliciously savoury. Top wine expert Jamie Goode gave the last vintage 96/100 and declared it ‘such a beautiful expression of Marlborough Pinot Noir'
- Wrekin Vineyard Pinot Noir - from a heavy clay-based vineyard in the Southern Valleys which produces fruit with lots of intensity and structure. A highly aromatic and floral nose leads to an earthy and savoury palate. This is a dark, more serious style of Pinot, with a gamey edge and great potential to age
- Marlborough Pinot Noir - a blend of three vineyards - Wrekin, Settlement and Churton - to give a vibrant, balanced Pinot. Gentle winemaking preserves the vineyard qualities - and it spends 14 months in French oak to give it structure and spiciness
- Wrekin Vineyard Chardonnay - from a biodynamic vineyard at the top of the Brancott Valley, you get a very flinty and mineral nose, with strong citrus and floral aromas. It’s a tight and pure style, and its subtle saline flavours reminds me of a really good Chablis
- Folium Vineyard Chardonnay - from our friend Takaki Okada's dry-grown vineyard in the Brancott Valley just 1km down the road from Wrekin, this is a textured, structured Chardonnay, with yellow fruit, citrus, spice and even a touch of saltiness. If you like a bigger style of Chardonnay like Meursault, then this is one to try
- Marlborough Chardonnay - a blend of Wrekin and Folium, you get lovely a citrusy freshness from the Wrekin, while the Folium adds ripeness and weight. Take the minerality of a Chablis and the richness of a good Meursault, and you're in business.
These are high-quality, artisanal wines, hand-made in small quantities. Each year and vineyard is different, just like great Burgundy is.
It's one pack per customer, and once they’re gone, we’ll have to wait until the next vintage for more.
So if Burgundian-style Pinot and Chardonnay is your thing, trust me - these are not to be missed.
Mike's great grandfather Marcus Joseph Paterson emigrated to New Zealand from Corofin Co. Clare in 1927.
So when Mike and wife Anna started Corofin, their own family business, they wanted to honour this history and special connection between his family and the land.
