If there’s one part of Spain that’s having a bit of a moment right now, it’s Galicia.
With its full-flavoured, lower-alcohol reds and deliciously aromatic whites, what’s not to love about it?
The Galician winemaking community is tight, and ever since I brought in Iria Otero’s wines, they’ve been keen to help each other out and make introductions.
So I’m delighted to bring you a selection of their wines today, so you can see what I’m talking about.
In the case you’ll get four amazing Galician bottles, plus two from just over the border in Bierzo (which I'm told is Galician in spirit anyway):
- 2x Iria Otero Teixugo Ribeiro 2022 - a rich and smooth blend of Sousón and Caíño Longo from the Ribeiro region. Putting them together is like ‘two neighbours who hate each other’ says Iria, but it really works. 2022 was a warmer vintage, which really ramps up the spice and power. As an added bonus the alcohol is only 12%, but you’d never think it
- 1x Iria Otero Sacabeira Albariño 2023 - the new vintage of Iria’s authentic and characterful Albariño is here. Crack open a bottle of this, and be transported to the lush green hills and glorious seafood of Rías Baixas in one refreshing salty sip
- 1x Silius Ferro Ribeira Sacra Godello 2022 - made by winemaker Ana Gadín from 25-60 year-old vines based on iron-rich soil, this is a delightfully refreshing and textured white which will delight Albariño and Chablis drinkers everywhere. 5% of Doña Blanca in the blend adds extra freshness
- 1x César Márquez Valtuille Bierzo 2022 - made by one of Spain’s most exciting young winemakers - the grapes here are from César’s home village of Valtuille, right in the heart of Bierzo. The wine is soft, silky and savoury, like a good northern Rhône Syrah or Premier Cru Burgundy, at an unbelievable price
- 1x César Márquez Godello Bierzo 2022 - a stunning oak-aged white from a special 100 year-old plot of Godello grapes, one of the oldest vineyards in Bierzo. Combine the freshness of a good Albariño and the complexity of a top Chardonnay, and you’re getting there.
P.s. If you’d like to build your own case, you can find the wines on a page here. Including A Pita Cega 2017 from Pilar Higuero, one of Spain’s greatest white wines!
