Chenin Blanc is Jocelyn’s ‘heartstring grape’ - and I must admit it has the same effect on me. This is an amazing example.

It’s made from old, 32-43 year-old vines in the up-and-coming Swartland region. The decomposed granite soils give the wine a unique salinity and crystalline character. It makes it so distinct and drinkable.

Jocelyn was the first independent winemaker to approach the farmer here for the grapes - traditionally they would end up in huge bulk blends destined for the supermarket. A crying shame.

After Jocelyn led the way, the farmer is now 90% independently sourced, and his grapes end up in superstar wines like these.

Jocelyn is a stickler for detail - she told me the exact time the grapes were picked in February 2018 (4am) and the time the next day she was first in the queue at the custom crush winery to process the grapes (7am).

It went straight into barrel the next day to undergo a gentle, 30-day natural ferment. The wine stays on its lees for its whole life in barrel - Jocelyn tells me this gives it a beautiful slow autolysis and texture.

It’s all these small details - along with the quality of the fruit - which makes this wine such a stunner. The nose is just amazing - it’s got peaches, honeysuckle and florals, you could (and should) sniff it for ages. On the palate it’s rich, textured and generous - if you like a full-bodied Chardonnay or Viognier, you’ll love this.

A mood enhancer

It lifted a bad day. Sumptuous colour and taste that filled the mouth. Clean, lovely finish. Well worth the price.

This is why the chicken crossed the road

Lovely light golden colour, nose has a touch of baked apple & very slightly oxidised . Quite light body, with bracing acidity, and a very clean decent finish. Great with roast chicken.
