Another bank holiday weekend is nearly upon us. And if you’re anything like me, you might be in need of a top-up!

In my search for the perfect bottles, I wanted some brand new arrivals, some great stories to tell anyone who’ll listen, as well as some wines I know are absolutely singing right now.

So I’ve settled on six great wines and built a case that you can also enjoy:

  • Courbis Saint-Joseph Vieilles Vignes 2023 (13%) - for me Syrah is the ultimate guilty pleasure red. It sits right in that sweet spot between elegant Burgundy and the more powerful southern French reds. A gem I found in Paris earlier this year, the fruit used to be sold to one of France’s greatest producers, Jean-Louis Chave (although you didn’t hear that from me!)
  • Tiberio Montepulciano 2023 (14.5%) - the new vintage from Cristiana Tiberio, one of Italy’s finest. From high up in the hills of Cugnoli in Abruzzo, this is a fresh and vibrant style of Montepulciano, and aged in steel tanks which means you throw it in the fridge and serve slightly chilled
  • Château Grand Boise Rosé 2025 (12.5%) - I can’t get enough of this. From the steep slopes of Sainte-Victoire near Aix-en-Provence, this is a serious outfit - only one-third of their production is rosé. Fresh, pale and delicious, it will go amazingly with food
  • Pauline Passot Chiroubles Grille-Midi 2023 (13%) - I came across a Hugh Johnson piece from 1997 the other day, and he said of Beaujolais - there’s ‘nothing from anywhere else that speaks so warmly and eloquently of its terroir and its blessedly unambitious grape. Beaujolais and its Villages are a deep well of carefree drinking, with the unique smack of French soil’. This is exactly why I love the charm and character of a good Beaujolais like this
  • Vinyes d’Olivardots Blanc de Gresa 2023 (13%) - I’m still on a high after Jancis Robinson’s great reviews, in which winemaker Carlota starred. This is a fresh, textured and mineral white from precious 100+ year old-vines in Empordà
  • Carinus Family Chenin Blanc 2023 (13%) - if Syrah is my guilty pleasure red, then Chenin is the white. Enough depth for food and enough zip to drink on its own, this is ridiculous value from Danie’s premier cru-equivalent grapes, and the last of the 2023 before we move to the next vintage.

P.s. If you’d like to mix your own case, you’ll find the wines here
