Verdejo is my guilty pleasure white wine. It’s fresh, crisp and delicious, slips down easy and you don’t feel guilty opening a cheeky midweek bottle given its price.

The good ones rarely make it over here, given they can’t compete with Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon on price. So I made it my business to find a top drawer Verdejo for WineSpark.

Step forward Pilar Garcia, who I found through my friend and sommelier-turned-winemaker Franck Massard.

Rueda is a high, hot and wild region in north west Spain - the perfect place to make refreshing white wine. Hot sunny days ripen the grapes to loads of flavour, while chilly nights keep them crisp and fresh.

Speak to any Spanish sommelier and they’ll tell you Verdejo is the most versatile white wine - unbelievably drinkable on its own, but goes with so many dishes.

So always worth having a bottle in the fridge!

Like many great winemakers, Pilar started out studying chemistry, before getting into winemaking.

It’s fair to say Pilar is a bit of a white wine nut. She only makes white wine. Her husband makes white wine. She’s a lecturer in the University of Valladolid, teaching students about the chemistry of white wine.

Pilar says this wine is very interesting with cheese. She thinks red wine and cheese is a big mistake! The acidity in this will clean your mouth, so you can taste the cheese better.

Very drinkable wine, quite fresh, with a nice combination of citrus, fruit and acidity. Good value.

Thanks Neil, it really is a drinkable all rounder!

Good quality Verdejo

Paired very well with grilled fish.
Equally quaffable on its own.

Must try it with grilled fish very soon, thanks Eamonn!

Typical searing citrus acidity - ultra dry

Christmas evening pre/with dinner. Plenty of less dry (more approachable) Verdejo out there for me. José Pariente for example.

Delicious

This is a great everyday white - super drinkable with just enough complexity to make it interesting. Really enjoying this and will be getting a case of it to have as our regular white.

It really is the perfect everyday white, thanks so much Bríd!

Our Resident Home Wine

This has become our House Wine; fancy an Aperitif, or a Wine to sip in the Sunshine with some smoked Salmon & Melon Slices, or maybe just because you'd like an excellent glass of White Wine. Enjoy! We will..

Fresh Summer Wine

Just had a bottle of this with Lemon Sole, Potatoes, Tomatoes in Cream followed by Brie. A real treat. I bought it because of John Wilson's review. I will buy more because of my own experience.
